Chapter 01 Β· Foundations
What is SAP ABAP in 2026?
From First Line of Code to Interview-Ready β a complete self-study series for absolute beginners.
If you have ever typed “how to learn SAP ABAP” into Google, you have probably found a wall of 10-year-old tutorials full of SE80 screenshots, unclear abbreviations, and no mention of where the job market is heading. This series is the opposite.
I am learning ABAP in 2026, right alongside you. Every chapter I learn one topic, break it, fix it, and write down everything β including the interview questions I would need to answer if I applied for a job next week. By the end of Chapter 20, you will have a working environment, a portfolio project, and 165 interview Q&A behind you.
But before any code, before any setup, we need one thing settled: what exactly is SAP ABAP, and why should you learn it in 2026?
π― Who Is This Chapter For?
This series is written for every kind of ABAP learner β whether you have paid SAP access or you are learning entirely for free. Here is how to read it:
- If you have a FREE SAP BTP Trial account β follow the π’ green dual path boxes. You will use Eclipse ADT and ABAP Cloud.
- If you have PAID SAP access (through a company, training institute, or personal S-user ID) β follow the π΅ blue dual path boxes. You will use SAP GUI with SE11, SE38, SE80, plus Eclipse ADT for Cloud work.
- Both paths teach the same concept. Choose the one that matches your access. You do not need both to learn ABAP.
- If you are unsure which path suits you β read the “Which Path Should I Choose?” section below before continuing.
π― What You Will Learn in This Chapter
- What SAP is, in plain English β and why 400,000+ companies run on it
- What ABAP is and where it sits inside the SAP ecosystem
- The real difference between Classic ABAP and ABAP Cloud
- What the 2026 ABAP job market actually looks like (salaries, roles, demand)
- Why “ABAP is dying” is a myth β and what is actually changing
- NEW: Which learning path (Free BTP Trial or Paid SAP access) suits your situation
π§ Which Path Should I Choose?
Before we dive in, let’s get one thing straight. Not every ABAP learner starts from the same place. There are four common situations. Find yours below and follow that path for the rest of the series.
Four learner types β find yourself
What You Can Do With Each Path
| Task | π’ Free Path (BTP Trial) | π΅ Paid Path (SAP System) |
|---|---|---|
| Editor | Eclipse ADT only | SAP GUI + Eclipse ADT |

π What is SAP, Really?
Forget the acronym for a second. SAP is business software. When a company sells a product, hires an employee, buys raw material, pays a salary, or ships an order β SAP is the system that records and controls all of it.
Think of a large company like a supermarket chain. They need to track:
- How much stock is in each store (Inventory)
- Which supplier delivered what and when (Procurement)
- How much each customer paid (Sales & Finance)
- How many employees work where and what they earn (HR)
SAP is the software that ties all of these together into one system, instead of ten separate ones. That is why it is called an ERP β Enterprise Resource Planning.
And what is ABAP?
ABAP stands for Advanced Business Application Programming. It is the programming language SAP itself is written in β and the language you use to customize, extend, and build on top of SAP.
An analogy that finally made it click for me:
When a company says “we need a custom report showing overdue invoices from the last 90 days”, that report is written in ABAP. When SAP itself needs a new feature, it is written in ABAP. ABAP is not a side tool β it is the language the entire SAP world speaks.
BTP Trial + Eclipse ADT
You will write ABAP code inside Eclipse ADT. Your programs run in the cloud and you will use modern tools like CDS Views and RAP.
- Log in to your BTP Trial account
- Open Eclipse ADT
- Write ABAP code inside classes
- Activate and run in the cloud
Company SAP + SAP GUI
You will write ABAP code inside SAP GUI transactions. Your programs run on your company’s SAP system, and you will also have access to ADT for Cloud work.
- Log in to SAP GUI
- Open transaction SE38 (reports) or SE80 (all objects)
- Write ABAP code
- Activate with Ctrl + F2, run with F8
Where does ABAP sit in the SAP landscape?
SAP has many modules. The most common ones you will hear about in interviews:
| Module | What it handles | Plain example |
|---|---|---|
| FI β Finance | Accounting, ledgers, payments | “Where did this βΉ5 lakh go?” |
| MM β Materials Management | Purchasing, inventory | “How much raw material is left?” |
| SD β Sales & Distribution | Orders, deliveries, billing | “Which orders shipped today?” |
| HR / HCM β Human Capital | Payroll, employees | “Who is on leave this week?” |
| PP β Production Planning | Manufacturing | “What do we build next week?” |
ABAP is not a module. It is the programming layer beneath all of them. Whatever module a developer works in, they write ABAP.
βοΈ Classic ABAP vs ABAP Cloud β The 2026 Reality
This is the single most important concept in this chapter. If you skip it, the rest of the series will feel confusing.
Classic ABAP (the old world β still everywhere)
Classic ABAP is what SAP has been built on for 30+ years. It runs on the SAP GUI (the grey screens you may have seen), uses report programs, ALV lists, function modules, and direct database access. It is powerful but tightly coupled β code can reach into anything.
Reality check: Roughly 70% of ABAP work in 2026 is still Classic ABAP β maintaining and enhancing systems that companies already run. If you skip Classic ABAP, you cannot get a job. This is not optional.
ABAP Cloud (the new world β where growth is)
ABAP Cloud is SAP’s modern development model. It runs in the cloud (like SAP BTP), restricts risky language features, and enforces “Clean Core” principles so custom code does not break upgrades. It uses CDS Views, RAP (RESTful ABAP Programming Model), and Fiori instead of classic lists.
Reality check: All new SAP development is heading toward ABAP Cloud. Companies migrating to S/4HANA need developers who understand it. If you only learn Classic, you will be stuck maintaining old code for the rest of your career.
| Aspect | Classic ABAP | ABAP Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On-premise, SAP GUI | SAP BTP, cloud |
| Editor | SAP GUI (SE38, SE80) | Eclipse ADT / VS Code |
| Data access | Open SQL directly on tables | CDS Views, released APIs only |
| UI output | ALV lists, Smart Forms | Fiori apps, OData services |
| Business logic | Reports, function modules | RAP business objects |
| Restrictions | Almost none | Many (for safety & upgrade stability) |
| 2026 job share | ~70% | ~30% and growing fast |
You Will Learn ABAP Cloud
With BTP Trial you have access to ABAP Cloud, which is where all new SAP development is heading. You will learn RAP, CDS Views, and Fiori β skills in high demand for S/4HANA migration projects.
What is missing: You cannot practice Classic ABAP tools like SE38, SE11, or WRITE statements on BTP Trial. That is fine β you can learn those later when you have paid access.
You Will Learn Both
With company SAP access you can learn Classic ABAP (SE38, SE80, SE11, ALV, Smart Forms) and ABAP Cloud (via Eclipse ADT) side by side. This is the complete picture and makes you a stronger candidate.
What to prioritize: Follow the Classic ABAP chapters (Part 2) first, since 70% of jobs use Classic today. Then move to ABAP Cloud chapters (Part 4).
πΌ The 2026 ABAP Job Market
You should know exactly what you are walking into. Here is the honest picture.
Demand
- ABAP is one of the most in-demand enterprise skills globally, because every large company running SAP needs ABAP developers to keep the system alive and extend it.
- The push to S/4HANA (SAP’s newest ERP) is creating a massive wave of migration projects. Companies need developers who understand both Classic and Cloud.
- Because ABAP is less “cool” than web development, far fewer people learn it β meaning less competition once you are skilled.
Typical roles
| Role | What you do | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Junior ABAP Developer | Write reports, fix bugs, support senior devs | 0β2 years |
| ABAP Developer | Build reports, forms, enhancements, interfaces | 2β5 years |
| Senior ABAP Developer | Design solutions, RAP, CDS, performance tuning | 5β9 years |
| Technical Lead / Architect | Own the technical direction of SAP projects | 9+ years |
| SAP Consultant (Technical) | Work directly with clients on requirements | 3+ years |
Salary ranges (indicative, 2026)
| Region | Entry (0β2 yrs) | Mid (3β6 yrs) | Senior (7+ yrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | βΉ3β6 LPA | βΉ8β18 LPA | βΉ20β40+ LPA |
| Europe | β¬35kβ50k | β¬55kβ80k | β¬85kβ120k+ |
| USA | $65kβ90k | $95kβ130k | $140kβ180k+ |
Figures are rough industry ranges for context only β actual pay varies by company, city, and skill.
Build a Portfolio on BTP Trial
Even without company access, you can build real ABAP Cloud apps and put them on GitHub or a personal site. Recruiters look for demonstrable skills, not certifications alone.
Tip: Screenshot every chapter’s output. By Chapter 20 you will have 20+ screenshots showing a full learning journey.
Build Enterprise Experience
With company access you can work on real production code, learn the politics of SAP projects, and see how ABAP is used at scale. This is experience that free learners simply cannot replicate.
Tip: Document every enhancement you make. When you move to a new job, these become portfolio case studies.
π« “ABAP is Dying” β Three Myths, Busted
Myth 1: “SAP is moving to cloud, so ABAP is dead.”
False. SAP’s cloud products (like S/4HANA Cloud) still run on ABAP. The cloud version, ABAP Cloud, is a new dialect of ABAP β not a replacement language. Developers are needed more than ever to migrate and extend cloud systems.
Myth 2: “AI will replace ABAP developers.”
AI tools (like SAP Joule and GitHub Copilot for ABAP) are now common β but they generate code that a developer must review, correct, and integrate. AI writes snippets; ABAP developers design and own systems. The skill shifts; it does not disappear.
Myth 3: “All ABAP jobs are in maintenance.”
Partly true in the past, false now. The S/4HANA migration wave means a huge share of ABAP work is new development: CDS Views, RAP apps, Fiori UIs, Clean Core refactoring. This is some of the most interesting enterprise development work in the market.
π Chapter Summary
- SAP is the world’s leading ERP software β used by 400,000+ companies to run money, materials, sales, and people.
- ABAP is the programming language SAP is built on and the language used to extend it.
- There are two worlds in 2026: Classic ABAP (still ~70% of work) and ABAP Cloud (the future).
- The job market is strong, competition is lower than web development, and S/4HANA migration is creating huge demand.
- “ABAP is dying” is a myth. The tooling is changing. The language and the demand are not going anywhere.
- NEW: There are two learning paths β π’ Free BTP Trial (ABAP Cloud) and π΅ Paid SAP access (Classic + Cloud). Both teach the same concepts. Pick the one that matches your access.
π€ Interview Questions & Answers
These are real questions asked in ABAP interviews. Read the answer, then try to say it out loud in your own words. If you can, you are ready for this chapter.
ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is the programming language developed by SAP. It is used to build, customize, and extend SAP ERP systems β the software companies use to run finance, sales, procurement, HR, and production.
It is used in every area of SAP: writing reports, building interfaces between SAP and other systems, creating print forms, enhancing standard SAP functionality, and β in modern SAP β building cloud applications using RAP and CDS Views.
Classic ABAP is the traditional development model. It runs on-premise via SAP GUI, allows direct database access through Open SQL, and uses reports, ALV lists, function modules, and Smart Forms.
ABAP Cloud is SAP’s modern model for cloud development. It runs on SAP BTP, uses Eclipse ADT or VS Code, restricts direct table access (you must use CDS Views and released APIs), and outputs Fiori UIs via RAP. It enforces Clean Core principles so custom code does not break during upgrades.
In short: Classic ABAP gives freedom and is used to maintain existing systems. ABAP Cloud gives structure and safety and is used for all new development.
ECC (ERP Central Component) is SAP’s previous-generation ERP. It runs on any supported database and uses Classic ABAP for customization.
S/4HANA is SAP’s current-generation ERP. It runs only on the SAP HANA in-memory database, has a simplified data model, and pushes logic to the database. Its cloud version uses ABAP Cloud for new development.
The key difference for a developer: in ECC you write code the classic way. In S/4HANA you use CDS Views, RAP, and Fiori β and must follow Clean Core principles so your customizations survive upgrades. Companies worldwide are migrating from ECC to S/4HANA right now, which is why ABAP developers are in demand.
Yes β for three reasons.
- Massive installed base: Hundreds of thousands of companies still run SAP, and most have custom ABAP code that must be maintained and migrated.
- S/4HANA migration wave: Every company moving from ECC to S/4HANA needs ABAP developers who understand both classic and modern (RAP, CDS) approaches.
- Lower competition: Fewer new developers choose ABAP compared to web or mobile development, so skilled ABAP developers are harder to find and command strong salaries.
The honest caveat: learning only Classic ABAP is not enough. You must also learn the modern stack (CDS Views, RAP, Fiori) to stay relevant. This series covers both.
In practice, ABAP work falls into five broad categories:
- Implementation: Building a new SAP system for a company β writing reports, forms, interfaces, and enhancements from scratch.
- Support / Maintenance: Fixing bugs, making small changes, and keeping an existing SAP system healthy.
- Rollout: Extending an existing SAP template to new countries, plants, or business units.
- Migration / Upgrade: Moving from ECC to S/4HANA, or upgrading to a new release. Heavy on CDS Views, RAP, and Clean Core work.
- Modernization: Rewriting classic ABAP as RAP business objects and Fiori apps β the fastest-growing category in 2026.
π Practice Task for This Chapter
Before you move to Chapter 2, do this. It takes 15 minutes and anchors everything you just read.
π’ Free Path (BTP Trial)
- Write down in your own words β one sentence each β what SAP, ABAP, Classic ABAP, and ABAP Cloud are.
- List three companies you know that likely use SAP (any large retailer, bank, manufacturer, or airline counts).
- Write one sentence answering: “Why am I learning ABAP in 2026?” Keep it. In Chapter 20 you will read it again.
- Decide your path: free BTP Trial or paid access? Write it down.
π΅ Paid Path (SAP System)
- Do all the steps above.
- Log in to your SAP system. Open transaction SE38 and SE80. Just look around β do not change anything yet.
- Note down: what version is your SAP system (ECC or S/4HANA)? This affects the chapters you will prioritize.
- If your system has Eclipse ADT access, open it and connect. If not, ask your admin for access β you will need it for Chapter 3 and beyond.
Test: Kon Banega Crorepati?
5 questions. βΉ1 Crore. Prove you understood Chapter 1. No pressure β restart anytime.
